Our two biggest issues since moving to Xalet Pigall have been electricity and water. We are not connected to any mains services, so we have had to learn a lot and take a far more proactive role towards these needs.
Our water supply comes from the rain which we collect from all the roofs of the property, and is collected in three tanks: two brick-built tanks under the house and garage, and another plastic tank on the driveway.
Rain is so scarce here that we have to constantly look for additional ways to harvest the rain when it does come. So I was pleased when I spotted a 'cliff' area towards the top of the land where the rain flowed of in certain places where a tank could be placed. This was what I first saw:
So, we bought a 500 litre tank and installed it:
Then we waited for it to rain.......and waited........and waited!
We just had some good rain, and we had to move the tank slightly to optimise the flow, but success! The rain flows off the rock, into the tank, down the two hoses and into our main water tank.
Planning Our Opening
I had a meeting yesterday with a chap from the county council and now we know how to proceed. We are planning to receive our first paying visitors from Easter 2017. Hence we now start our marketing.
Frances and Barry Copping bought Xalet Pigall in 2015. They are working towards resilience and self-sufficiency.
