With the help of Marco, a local carpenter, we now have a new loo in our apartment. It's a free-standing urine-separating composting toilet. At the moment it's situated facing the standard flushing toilet, but we plan to get that removed soon. Using a compost toilet will save a significant amount of water, and we will compost our waste and have the liquid waste as a fertiliser for the garden. We have been surprised how little it smells as we cover the waste with sawdust after each use. We've also put several sprigs of rosemary in the box. When it's moved to it's permanent location adjacent the outside wall, we will be installing a small solar powered fan to vent air outside.
